World Hunger Organizations

Church World Service rated highest among Charities

May 11, 2007

NEW YORK, May 11--Church World Service has earned the highest rating--four out of four stars--from Charity Navigator, the independent organization that evaluates the financial health of America’s largest charities in order to help donors make informed decisions about contributing to a particular organization.

Fewer than 25 percent of the charitable organizations Charity Navigator evaluates receive its highest rating.

John A. Paterakis, treasurer of Church World Service's board of directors (current Treasurer lick below), said the global humanitarian agency’s financial management and accountability go beyond the fiduciary responsibilities assigned by law. “Our board and staff see our obligation as that of stewards for that with which we have been entrusted. I am delighted that Charity Navigator has recognized both the efficiency of our day-to-day operation and our capacity to deal with what the future may bring to the world community whom we serve."   For current CWS Board of Directors click here.

The designation comes as New York City-headquartered Church World Service celebrates more than 60 years of providing help and hope to struggling people in the United States and around the world.

“This is further affirmation of the value of work CWS has been doing for all these years,” said John L. McCullough, executive director and CEO of Church World Service. "We hope this achievement will result in even greater donor confidence and giving in support of our ministry and mission.”

Founded in 1946, Church World Service is the relief, development and refugee assistance agency supported in part by 35 Protestant, Orthodox and Anglican denominations in the United States. The agency works in partnership with indigenous organizations in some 80 countries.

In the United States, Church World Service assists communities responding to disasters, resettles refugees, advocates for fair national and international policies, and sponsors CROP Hunger Walks in communities throughout the nation.

Rating Update >> Recognized as one of America's Most Efficient Charities, Church World Service has earned an A rating from the American Institute of Philanthropy and was named one of the Top 100 Highly Rated Charities by GiveSpot.com.
